Assignment 16 - What’s Your Secret Sauce?

Assignment 16 - What’s Your Secret Sauce?

1. Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique

1. Attention to detail- I believe that my attention to detail sets me apart from other people. For example, I am passionate about watches, and it is not enough for me to know how a watch is powered. I need to know how many times the second hand beats per second, how long the power reserve lasts, and the origin of manufacture. This trait has helped me to efficiently and effectively complete tasks assigned to me in the past.

2. Passion- My favorite thing in life is being caught up in passion. To be so engulfed in something that you loose a sense of the world around you. I am passionate about a number of things including timepieces, cars, and technology. My passion in these areas has taught me what it means to be truly engaged with what one is doing. I have brought that passion into my academics, and it has proven to be effective.

3. Emotional Intelligence- I have worked in several group settings and positions that involve constant interaction with other people. Through this, I have been able to develop strong emotional intelligence skills that help me understand the emotions of others. This helps me tremendously when I perform mentor and leadership roles.

4. Drive- I have been taught to put everything I have into everything I do. This has helped me overcome a number of obstacles in my life where the absence of 110% of my effort would result in failure. It is this drive that has gotten me where I am today, and will help me get where I want to be in the future.

5. Quick Learning- I am able to pick up skills and knowledge quite quickly. This has helped me pursue my passion for music because I like to learn how to play a variety of instruments at the same time and in a short duration of time. This has also helped me academically by allowing me to understand and master material efficiently.

2. Interview the five people who know you the best

Summary: The human capital attributes listed by this interviewee are passion, dedication, communication, and emotional intelligence. My biggest takeaway from this interview is that the person I spoke to listed the ability to make people feel valued as one of my skills. This is an ability I did not know I had, and am very happy to hear someone tell me that I have that ability.

2. Link: https://soundcloud.com/user-64325432/interview-2-1
Summary: This interviewee notes parts of my human capital being my detail orientation, passion, and dedication. My take away from this interview was the interviewee’s mention of integrity. This is a part of my human capital that I did not think to include in my own analysis of myself.

3. Link: https://soundcloud.com/user-64325432/interview-3
Summary: This interviewee listed being thorough and preparedness as parts of my human capital. Preparedness is another one of the parts of my human capital that I did not see initially. Thinking back, I do spend quite a lot of time in the preparation of everything I do.

4. Link: https://soundcloud.com/user-64325432/interview-4
Summary: This interviewee listed strong motivation, focus on success, being sociable, an objective mindset, and knowledge of various topics as what sets me apart from other people. My biggest take away was that the interviewee said that I “focus on succeeding way too much”. Looking back, I may have let the pursuit of success get in the way of some important life experiences. It may be something I need to work on in the future.

5. Link: https://soundcloud.com/user-64325432/interview-5
Summary: The parts of my human capital that this interviewee listed were good public speaking skills, strong work ethic, determination, kindness, and loyalty. My biggest takeaways, as it has been for a lot of these interviews, are the parts of my human capital that I did not see myself. For this interview, it was loyalty and good public speaking skills.

3. Reflect on the differences

There are differences in how I assessed myself as compared to others, but the differences are small in number. For the most part, what was listed by my interviewees lines up relatively close to what I put on my own human capital list. What I think causes these differences is perception. One views oneself very differently than another person does. That is why I found this assignment so interesting. I was curious to see what people perceived my “secret sauce” to be.  I think all of my interviewees were correct about me. Everything they listed describes me accurately. I would not make any corrections to the list I made in part one of this post.
