Assignment 8A - Solving the Problem

Assignment 8A - Solving the Problem

I gazed upon the white walls of the doctor's office in silence. It felt as though an eternity had passed as I awaited my results. The sound of the door opening as the doctor strolled in sent shivers down my aching spine. “Your results are in... Your back has suffered irreversible trauma” said the doctor. I let out a sad sigh. “How did this happen?” I asked. “You have been sitting on the ground to frequently with your back at a bad angle. Your spine isn’t meant to bend that aggressively for such a long duration of time” he said. “If only I had a chair to sit in during my lectures...” I thought to myself.

Above is a skit dramatizing the pain one feels after having to sit on the ground during long lectures. I have seen students having to result to sitting on the ground because there are not any chairs available during lecture. I can see the pain in their eyes as they desperately try to readjust themselves to find a comfortable sitting position. I have experienced this problem myself. For the entirety of this semester I have had trouble finding a seat during lectures. After sitting on the ground for two straight weeks in class I felt like I had the back of an elderly man. Too many students feel this pain alongside me. My opportunity is to find a solution to the lack of available seating in lecture halls. I want to ensure that no student will ever have to suffer on the ground in the pursuit of knowledge ever again. My proposed solution is a product. That product is a portable chair. The portable chair would have a similar form factor to a fifteen inch laptop, but have a thickness of about three inches to insure that it would fit comfortably inside of a backpack. The chair would be made of canvas and aluminum tubes in order to keep it light. It would also have a small, attachable desk about the size of an iPad, similar to the small desks in lecture halls. The chair would only be raised about a foot off of the ground in order to ensure no student's view is obstructed during a lecture. This product can be used anywhere one needs a chair such as the library, advising, or at the park on a nice day. Please let me know what you all think of this product. I would love to hear your feedback.

  1. For some reason I could see myself taking this everywhere not just class. Some places that I would take this is games when it becomes too packed. I have never really had to experience sitting on the floor during lectures, but this is a really great idea if their are many lectures that have this problem. I would also love to see this prototype. Some questions I would like to know is:

Where would you get this material?
Would students really buy this product?
How much the product will cost?
Who would you pitch this idea to?
Has this invention been tried before?

Other than that I really like the idea, and personally I would try to even expand the market to other customers. For instance, you don't have to just target students.

  2. Hi Alexander,
I think this is a great idea, would it be an issue when students are scattered throughout the lanes of an auditorium and they cant pack up fast enough when its time to switch classes. Additionally, if this has a desk component the size factor comes into question. Outside of classroom settings I see this being more useful but what differentiates this from a folding chair like this one:https://www.amazon.com/ONIVA-Picnic-Portable-Folding-Sports/dp/B000NBH8Z6/ref=sr_1_15?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1549318953&sr=1-15&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_browse-bin%3A2763116011
