Assignment 21 - Reading Reflection No. 2

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The book that I chose to read was The Art of Social Media - Power Tips for Power Users. The general theme of this book is social media and how to use it effectively. It gives a number of tips (123 to be exact) to use on a variety of specific social media platforms. It covers tips for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest, and a variety of other platforms. It also covers more general topics in the realm of social media such as how to increase one’s number of followers and how one should respond to comments.

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I believe that the book connects to the course because if one is to start a business, then one must use social media. Social media can be a very powerful promotional tool when used effectively, and that is what the book teaches. The book enhances what I am learning by showing me how to effectively use social media. If I turn my business idea into reality, then I can use what I have learned in this book to effectively use social media to help promote my product and company.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
The exercise I would design would be based on social media. I would have students create and run a Facebook page for their product or service. They would be given instructions on how to make an impactful Facebook page, and will run it as an actual company would for a period of time with regular posts.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
The book I chose has a quote at the beginning of every chapter. The final chapter had a quote by Marthe Troly-Curtin that read “Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time”. The rest of the quotes in the book did not generate any emotional response from me, but this one had me thinking about it for a few hours. It made me think about my time management and what I did that I viewed as a waste of time. It made me reevaluate my perception of the activities I do on a daily bases. I used to view my short breaks to pursue my passions as a way for me to procrastinate and waste time. Now, however, I view it differently. Passion is a beautiful thing, and time spent in the pursuit of it is time well spent. I expected the book to change the way I viewed social media, but not the way I viewed the value of activities in my day-to-day life.

  1. Hi Alexander,
I also read the same book you did. I agree that that the information that we gained from reading this book, it really helps readers become efficient in using social media, which is crucial in today’s society. I also like the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, I thought that was very cool. I also think that the exercise you designed would be very beneficial.
